Generating Ideas P1(U21), M1 (U21)

LO: (U21): Be able to be able generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief.  P1(U21), M1 (U21)

How I've Interpreted The Client Brief

 Requirements:

  • A magazine for north London (Explicit)
  • A front cover (Explicit)
  • A double page spread (Explicit)
  • Develop the idea across all of London if it is successful (Implicit) - Open to interpretation

From my interpretation of the client brief, I believe that the client requirements are to ensure that the magazine is both online and print based, with a key link to North London due to the growing music scene that is developing locally, however, I should also make sure the magazine is appropriate for all areas of London too, not just North London, because from my understanding, The London Magazine may decide to develop the idea across all areas of London depending on how successful the idea is. Despite the fact that there are certain things I must include in the magazine, from my interpretation of the client brief,  there is also room for some of my own original creativity to include such as the name of the magazine, the colour theme for the magazine, the price and content. As well as this, I have interpreted from the client brief that the London magazine wants me to make sample pages of the magazine to showcase the talent and venues in the North London area, which will include the front cover of the magazine and a double page spread sheet.

First Thoughts For Possible Ideas

One possible idea for the magazine is a black, white and red colour theme, focusing on pop music, looking at different pop artists, talking about their music journey and their songs as well as other things to do with the artists. One artist will be pictured at a tube station in North London and this will be the front cover of the magazine. Another possible idea for the magazine is a festival themed magazine that is based in North London. The magazine will talk about all the different music festivals that will be happening in North London as well as the artists that are set to feature at these festivals. The magazine will be bright coloured, colours such as yellow and red. Another possible idea for the magazine is a magazine on jazz. The magazine will be talking about jazz singers, their career in the music industry and where they will be performing, as well as other information to do with the singers and jazz music. The magazine will be red, green and white coloured.

Three key Ideas Explained Complete With Documentation To Support Ideas Generation

First idea: Magazine on pop  - This magazine will be all about pop artists who are very current in the music industry. Each page will talk about a different pop artist , for example one page will feature different information on a singer and all their songs and another page will feature an interview from a different singer talking about their childhood and how they became a singer. The pages will be in pink green and white, however all writing will be in red and pictures of the singers will remain in normal colour. North London love pop music and many famous singers grew up in North London, such as Leona Lewis, which is why I believe a pop magazine would be a good idea to sell to north Londoners.

Second idea: Magazine on festivals in North London. This magazine will be about all the different festivals that will be taking place in North London and who will be performing in them. The magazine will be in yellow, red and white and the front cover of the magazine will be a picture of a stage at one of the festivals that has taken place in the past at North London, with an artist performing on the stage whilst the crowd are dancing. There are many festivals that take place in North London and thousands and thousands of north Londoners purchase tickets to go to these festivals, one of these festivals being Wireless. Wireless has being going for 11 years and last year 135,000 people attended, showing just how popular festivals are in North London which is why I believe this magazine will sell sucessfully.

Third idea: Magazine on jazz - This magazine will be all about jazz singers who either grew up in the North London area or will be performing in the North London area. Each page will feature different Jazz singers and will talk about information such as where they will be performing. The magazine will be pink, black and gold coloured with the front cover of the magazine being a jazz singer performing on stage in one of the many jazz clubs/bars that are in North London. Many north Londoners attend these jazz clubs, in fact there is a jazz club in mill hill, north London that has being going for 19 years, which not only shows how popular jazz is in north London but also shows how jazz is part of north London culture, which is why I believe this magazine will be successful.

The Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Different Ideas

Conclusion:

To conclude, all 3 of these ideas have their strengths and weaknesses however, at this early stage I believe the idea I will be going through with is the festival idea because I believe that a festival magazine would be the best and most suitable magazine for North London. The magazine will act as a guide to telling people all about the different festivals that will be taking part in North London. This links directly to the client requirements - being that it is North London focused and will reflect the vibrant music scene developing locally. I will also be able to create my own original content and there is a gap in the market for this type of magazine, which means that my magazine will have a USP.
